Defensive injuries are piling up as new centre-back joins ranks
Marc Guehi will make his Manchester City debut as Wolves visit the Etihad on Saturday, Pep Guardiola has confirmed.
The England centre-back joined Manchester City from Crystal Palace last week in a move worth £20million.
It is a well-timed signing for the club, who pipped various Premier League rivals to the deal as they looked to add cover for the absent Josko Gvardiol, Ruben Dias and John Stones, all dealing with long-term injuries.
As such, Guehi will be thrown into the fray at the first time of asking. He was ineligible to face Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League on Tuesday, but Guardiola has confirmed he will be used against Premier League strugglers Wolves.
“Yes. Considering the absence of central defenders, it’s really good,” said Guardiola.
He continued, adding that he was unsure whether Nunes could be involved on Saturday. The Spaniard was taken ill ahead of the Manchester derby, replaced in the starting lineup by Rico Lewis, and played no part against Bodo/Glimt.
Gaurdiola confirmed he was continuing to recover from his virus: “Matheus [Nunes] had a virus, I don’t know [if he can play against Wolves]. We’ll see with the doctor.”
The injury headaches continue further up the pitch, with central midfielder Nico Gonzalez also out with an unspecified injury.
Pressed for an update, Guardiola gave a vague yet unoptimistic prognosis: “Nico, I don’t think [he will play].”
In spite of the mounting injuries in his squad, Guardiola is confident his side’s quality will carry him through the remainder of this campaign.
“I have an extraordinary team and extraordinary group of players,” he declared. “We are all together and we are a fantastic football team. I have no doubt about that.”
