After punctuating their start to the calendar year with a string of dropped points, Manchester City's Premier League hopes looked to be disappearing.
That appeared to be confirmed when they went 1-0 down to Dominik Szoboszlai's latest 'worldie' free-kick late on against Liverpool. But, needing something, City found it. Two late goals from Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland turned the game on its head and, having suffered so much misery at Anfield, Pep Guardiola finally left the ground with a smile on his face.
Some three points are worth more and that was one of them. Now City need to cash in and string wins together.
That process has started as they've now won six and drawn one of the last seven in all competitions and they've won six on the bounce at the Etihad, keeping clean sheets in four of the latest five.
Boosted further by Arsenal blowing a 2-0 lead at bottom club Wolves in midweek, City are coming up on the rails and, unlike the leaders, they know exactly what to do.
A lengthy trip to Azerbaijan to face Qarabag in the Champions League playoff is hardly the best preparation ahead of a game like this.
Then again, if you win that tie 6-1 as Newcastle did, the journey home seems far less arduous so Eddie Howe will be hoping that his side carry momentum into this one.
It's certainly been a good week for Newcastle in the cups after they won 3-1 at Aston Villa last weekend. That booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup where their opponents are... Manchester City.
That March date on Tyneside will be a fifth meeting of the season as the two also played each other recently in the Carabao Cup. City won both semi-final ties - 2-0 at St James' Park and 3-1 at the Etihad. Newcastle scored a 2-1 home win in the first Premier League meeting this season, a Harvey Barnes double securing all three points.
After a series of slips ups from Arsenal, Manchester City can now officially say the title is in their own hands.
Arsenal have a five-point lead, but if City win their game in hand and beat Arsenal at home in April, Pep's men have a path. On the exchange, Man City are now as short as 2.64 to win the Premier League.
Saturday 16 August, 12.30pm
For Saturday's game, Man City are just 1/2 to bank three more points, while Newcastle are 9/2 and The Draw 3/1.
There's an argument that these two sides know each other so well now after all the recent meetings that the extra familiarity will lead to a cancelling out. Both managers will be hyper aware of strengths and weaknesses and can combat or exploit them.
But perhaps it's also true that City match up well against Newcastle and can beat them for a third time in just over a month.
While thumping Qarabag was great for morale, it was still a lengthy trip for Newcastle. That tie was a third straight away game after visits to Tottenham and Villa Park.
By contrast, three of City's last four games have been at home and the other was a short trip to Liverpool. They should be refreshed after having a full week off since a routine 2-0 FA Cup win over Salford.
Newcastle did extremely well to win all those three away games, especially with Howe under pressure at the start of that run. But I wonder how much is left in the tank for this one - the hardest of the lot - while the continued absence of Bruno Guimaraes is likely to catch up with them sooner rather than later. The Magpies haven't won any of the 10 Premier League games that the influential Brazilian has missed in his Newcastle career.
City have won each of their last six home games in all competitions and notably they were leading at the break every time.
Malick Thiaw netted in two of Newcastle's last three games and has bagged four goals in his last 12 road trips. He's 10/1 to add another here.
Fellow central defender Marc Guehi got his first City goal in the win over Salford and is 5/1 to wheel away in celebration again on Saturday. Before his January transfer, he'd scored in three away games for Crystal Palace this season.
