City still short in defence but better news as Ederson pushes to return from abdominal injury

Ederson’s return to fitness has presented Pep Guardiola with a selection dilemma ahead of Manchester City’s FA Cup trip to Bournemouth.

City are looking to reach the semi-finals of the competition for the seventh season in a row, and go one better than when they were beaten by Manchester United in last year’s final.

Ederson is in contention to feature at the Vitality Stadium, having missed the draw with Brighton before the international break with an abdominal injury. He then withdrew from international duty with Brazil.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Guardiola said: ““Some of [the players] returned a little more tired and need recovery.

“[Ederson] trained the last two days.”

Stefan Ortega has started in goal in the previous two rounds against Leyton Orient and Plymouth, but Guardiola refused to confirm whether that would again be the case against Bournemouth on Sunday.

“We will see tomorrow,” he said.

City are expected to name a strong side, with this their final chance of winning domestic silverware.

John Stones, Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji are all still out with injuries, meaning Abdukodir Khusanov is set to partner Ruben Dias in the heart of defence again.

There were concerns over Josko Gvardiol’s fitness after he came off during the international break while playing for Croatia against France, but he is expected to be available against Bournemouth.

Omar Marmoush will hope to start behind Erling Haaland, which would leave the likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Savinho and Jeremy Doku competing for the two places out wide.
