Kieran Dewsbury-Hall’s inspired strike earned Everton a 1-0 win over Man United despite Idrissa Gana Gueye being sent off for slapping teammate Michael Keane at Old Trafford.
The Senegalese international was judged to have violently struck the defender in a confrontation after they lost possession, only for Dewsbury-Hall to curl in the opener before half time.
United were dominant as expected but profligacy in front of goal was ultimately their undoing, as David Moyes bested his former employers to go level on points in 11th.
Everton sprang out of the trap and came close to an opener six minutes in as Gueye slotted Iliman Ndiaye in behind to float a dangerous ball right across goal.
Veteran fullback Seamus Coleman soon hobbled off injured in his first start this season, Gueye – visably furious with Keane – saw red for appearing to strike his face with his hand after a misplaced pass just outside the box.
The scenes echoed former Newcastle players Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer’s altercation almost 20 years ago, and brought an abrupt end to their bright start in unbelievable fashion.
But Everton remained compact and the ball-carrying ability of Jack Grealish and Ndiaye to keep hold of the ball was on full show.
And just shy of the half-hour mark they remarkably took the lead when James Garner fed Dewsbury-Hall in the left channel, breezing past Lenny Yoro and curling a brilliant shot into the top right corner.
With the numerical disadvantage and his country’s manager Thomas Tuchel watching on from the stands, he couldn’t have picked a better time to score his third goal of the season.
United ended the half stronger as Patrick Dorgu found space at the back post only to wastefully slash wide the cross from Joshua Zirkzee.
Bruno Fernandes would have a try with a powerful effort from distance that Jordan Pickford got a firm glove to, keeping out the United captain minutes before half time.
Referee Tony Harrington waved away United’s appeals for a penalty as Bryan Mbeumo went down under the challenge of Keane at full stretch, beating him to Amad Diallo’s cutback.
The Red Devils threatened Pickford’s goal moments later as substitute Mason Mount headed Amad’s cross from the left wide.
Ruben Amorim’s record win as United boss came in a 4-0 win over the Toffees, with Zirkzee scoring twice in that game, but his side were sluggish and refused to convert their chances.
Looking short of ideas, Mathias de Ligt decided to go direct and found Mount running in behind, squaring the ball for Fernandes but he lifted it over the bar from seven yards out.
The home support grew frustrated as Grealish won a free kick off of Amad, getting his body in front of the ball and being bundled over.
Pickford kept his side in front with a delightful save ten minutes from time, diving to his left to keep out Zirkzee’s header that seemed destined for the bottom left corner.
De Ligt could have steered home an equalizer in the second minute of stoppage time after the ball broke loose to him in the penalty area, but the tame shot was easily saved.
It proved to be their final chance, as 10-man Everton triumphed at Old Trafford for the wrong reason – defying the red card to Gueye for his first-half scrap with Keane.
With several United players on their knees at full time, Moyes’ fists were held aloft in celebration of his first win returning to Old Trafford – denying United entry into the top four.
