Manchester United Under-21 team’s National League Cup fixture against Tamworth last month had to be abandoned after Sekou Kone picked up a head injury.

The young midfielder clashed heads with an opponent while clearing the ball from a corner. And while he initially got up, he was advised to lie down by the Red Devils’ medical team as they proceeded to assess him.

Kone was ultimately taken off the field on a stretcher. The 19 year old was then moved to a hospital as a precaution and the match was abandoned with the score at 0-0.

Kone may have to play with a mask on

United later provided an update on the matter via a statement on their website, which read:

“We can confirm Sekou is conscious, stable and communicating with United’s medical team. He has been taken to hospital, as a precaution, for further checks. Everybody at the club wishes him a speedy recovery.”

It has since been reported that the teenager fractured his eye socket, and there have also been suggestions that he may have to play with a protective mask.

United have now provided an update on the rescheduling of the match.

Kone could emerge as United’s secret weapon this season

The Red Devils have announced that the game will be played on December 16, Tuesday. The statement has also provided an update on the tickets for the rearranged game.

“Tickets for the original fixture are able to be reused for this rearranged fixture. United were followed by a healthy travelling support, for which players and staff were very grateful, especially given the ultimate circumstances of the way the game was cut short,” the statement read.

As such, the tie against Brackley on September 16 will be United’s opening group stage game in the National League Cup. United will also faceRochdale and Solihull Moors in the tournament before December’s rescheduled tie against Tamworth.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on Kone this season, with the youngster highly rated at Old Trafford. The Premier League giants were keen to sign a new midfielder this summer, with Carlo Baleba high on their agenda.

A move never materialized, but the Red Devils opted against signing an alternative, apparently because they believe Kone could have an impact this campaign.
