Bennett’s sister, Megan, also shared that their father had been struggling with alcoholism and depression.

United’s senior players and academy starlets alike have all rallied around Bennett, offering him messages of condolences as he comes to terms with the loss.

It was reported that the club have given Bennett compassionate leave.

Earlier today, United released a statement condoling with the 21-year-old and his loved ones, while also confirming that the Under-21s will hold a minute’s silence and wear black armbands when they face Rochdale on Tuesday night at the Crown Oil Arena.

United’s statement read, “Everyone at Manchester United is sending love and support to Rhys Bennett, whose father, David, passed away over the weekend.”

“Rhys is receiving wellbeing support from the club and has requested privacy for his family at this time of grief.”

“Our deepest condolences go to Rhys, his family, and anyone else affected by this devastating loss.”

“In a mark of respect, our Under-21s team will wear black armbands and hold a minute’s silence at this evening’s National League Cup fixture against Rochdale.”

Manchester-born Bennett captained the United team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2022. The side featured the likes of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

Bennett scored in the final against Nottingham Forest, which was staged at a packed Old Trafford.
