A move for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is expected to be out of reach for Manchester United this summer.

Tonali has been named as a top target for Manchester United ahead of the summer window, as the Red Devils plan a rebuild in midfield.

The Italy international is one of several names under consideration and is open to an exit from St James’ Park, as Newcastle face missing out on Champions League qualification.

However, with the club keen to sign at least two midfielders and a left-back in the summer, a deal for Tonali is considered potentially out of reach.

The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell has said a starting price point in excess of £70m could see United consider more affordable alternatives. Arsenal and Manchester City have also both monitored Tonali’s situation.

United are also ready to rival Manchester City for Elliot Anderson, though the latter are frontrunners for the Nottingham Forest midfielder.

More cost-efficient alternatives under consideration include West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, whose asking price could drop if the Hammers are relegated. Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, already relegated at Molineux, and Bournemouth’s Alex Scott are also admired.
