Barcelona’s interest in Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel has taken a significant turn, with the English club considering legal and regulatory options over the teenager’s future.
According to SPORT, United are examining how they can protect their interest if the 15-year-old follows through with his intention to leave.
The situation has become increasingly complicated as interest from several major European clubs continues to grow.
Gabriel is yet to sign a professional contract with Manchester United, with his age creating further complications around any potential move.
Barcelona have been among the clubs associated with Gabriel in recent months, with the Catalan side understood to have assessed the possible operation and its implications.

The story gained further attention after Gabriel and his family were seen in Barcelona. There were also claims that sporting director Deco had met with the player’s representative, Ali Barat.
Deco, however, publicly distanced Barcelona from the situation when asked about the teenager.
“We are not interested in any player in his situation. I am not sure what’s happening, and if he’s still a Manchester United player. We are not involved in that,” he said.
That statement effectively put the speculation to rest, although the fact remains Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are also monitoring the situation.

The teenager is approaching his 16th birthday, which could become an important point in determining how the club handles his future.
As such, Manchester United are now assessing what regulatory mechanisms may be available to prevent other parties from facilitating his departure.
The financial aspect is also relevant, as without a professional contract, United could face a very different compensation situation if Gabriel leaves the country compared with the valuation he has attracted within the youth market.
For now, there is no public confirmation that Manchester United have formally launched legal proceedings.
The club is instead understood to be examining its options as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern remain linked with the highly rated youngster.
