Manchester United face two major obstacles in their bid to bring Aurelien Tchouameni to Old Trafford, according to Fabrizio Romano.

In his words, the Red Devils believe Tchouameni is the ‘perfect’ replacement for Casemiro. However, securing his services is easier said than done.

Firstly, Tchouameni is on massive wages that could make Man Utd baulk, especially after paying a large transfer sum.

Secondly, Los Blancos are not willing to let him walk to Man United. Club president Florentino Perez said he believes the France international will remain in Spain.

Manchester United may be forced to look elsewhere for steel in midfield, with Tchouameni slipping away.

Ederson is on the verge of joining the Red Devils, but they must add a specialist holding midfielder to the ranks to balance the squad.

Man United’s midfield is crying out for legs and athleticism. The club must bring in someone who fits that profile and can anchor proceedings.

Man United should consider reviving interest in Andrey Santos

Perhaps Manchester United should revisit their interest in Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos.

The Brazilian is one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Europe, yet opportunities have remained scarce.

If regular football is not forthcoming, Santos may eventually look elsewhere to accelerate his development.

For Man United, he is a far smarter investment than some of the expensive names currently being linked with the club.

Santos possesses many of the qualities Michael Carrick’s side desperately need in the middle of the park.

He is dominant in the air, relishes the physical side of the game and is capable of producing crunching tackles that halt opposition attacks before they develop.

Beyond his defensive work, he is also an intelligent passer who can break lines and progress the ball quickly through midfield.

Perhaps most importantly, Santos has shown a strong mentality throughout his career, thriving under pressure and refusing to be intimidated by bigger stages.

He still has plenty of room for growth while already boasting attributes that would immediately improve Man United’s midfield balance.
