Manchester United head into their Premier League meeting with Wolves surrounded by familiar uncertainty, with fitness once again shaping Ruben Amorim’s preparations. The Old Trafford side edged past Newcastle 1-0 on Boxing Day, yet the victory came with a cost as Mason Mount was forced off after reporting muscle tightness. United have monitored the midfielder closely since, and there remains guarded optimism that he can be involved when Wolves arrive.

Mount’s availability matters. Amorim has leaned on his tactical intelligence and pressing discipline, particularly after switching to a 4-3-3 against Newcastle. That system brought control in midfield and is expected to remain in place for Wolves, provided the personnel can support it.
United’s medical staff continue to assess Mount, with Amorim hopeful the issue does not escalate. The Boxing Day substitution was precautionary, yet it underlined how little margin for error United currently possess. Should Mount fall short, the manager may turn to Jack Fletcher to partner Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro, a combination that prioritises structure over invention.
The Wolves fixture demands energy and organisation. With Mount, United gain balance between lines. Without him, responsibility shifts quickly to younger shoulders.
While Mount offers hope, Bruno Fernandes does not. The club captain remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, despite his eagerness to accelerate recovery. Amorim made his stance clear after Newcastle.
“Bruno was already saying that he needs to train, but we don’t know,” Amorim said straight after the Newcastle game. “No chance he is going to play against Wolves, no chance.”
Fernandes’ absence removes creativity and leadership, forcing United to find solutions through system rather than star quality.
The injury list remains stubbornly long. Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire are still unavailable, with Amorim offering a blunt assessment.
“Kobbie Mainoo is going to start on the [training] pitch also, so we will see. Matthijs is struggling a little bit. Harry the same thing.
“I think Kobbie is not going to be ready. Bruno is not going to be ready. I think Matt is not going to be ready. Harry is not going to be ready. So, I think we are not going to have more players.”
United are also without Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo due to the Africa Cup of Nations. That leaves Amorim relying on continuity, discipline and a front three likely featuring Patrick Dorgu, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha. Against Wolves, Manchester United will need cohesion more than comfort.
