Nonetheless, the Red Devils have sometimes struggled against smaller teams, such as Hull last week.

The BBC report that Carrick is winless in all three of his meetings with newly promoted sides, where he has drawn two matches and lost one.

He has an incredible record of 2.47 points per game against non-promoted teams and a lowly 0.33 against new sides.

Avoiding unpleasant record

If the Red Devils were to lose, it would only be the third time in Premier League history that they have lost their opening two matches of the season.

They lost their first two games in the 1992-1993 season and also in 2022-2023 under Erik ten Hag.

If they lose and fail to score, it would be the first time this has happened since the 1933-1934 campaign.
