Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick is expected to ring the changes when his team hosts Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

The contest will take place at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening (8:00 pm local time), only three days removed from the disappointing defeat in the Manchester Derby.

But while the Red Devils need a swift reaction, the manager also has to rotate the squad, and the Carabao Cup is unofficially considered THE competition to field underused squad players.

How Man United will line up against Brighton

Predicting the starting lineup for this one is particularly difficult, as the manager won’t be selecting his best available options, but instead those who need playing time, or perhaps a combination of the two.

But one thing is for sure: this will be a heavily rotated lineup, starting with the goalkeeper, as Karl Darlow is tipped to make his Man Utd debut, replacing Senne Lammens between the sticks.

At the back, the young duo of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven should take over from Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez, while Noussair Mazraoui replaces Diogo Dalot, as per custom.

The identity of the left-back remains shrouded in mystery, as Luke Shaw’s availability remains uncertain, while Patrick Dorgu didn’t cover himself in glory on Sunday. Therefore, this could be the perfect opportunity to give a chance to Harry Amass, who could be the best available understudy for Shaw.

Andrey Santos & Mason Mount to reunite in midfield?

In the first few matches of pre-season, the unlikely duo of Andrey Santos and Mason Mount surprisingly impressed.

This partnership was interrupted by Mount’s summer injury, while Youri Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo emerged as Carrick’s first choice while awaiting Carlos Baleba’s return to fitness.

But with Mount fit again, the coach has the opportunity to test him alongside Santos for the first time in a competitive fixture.

Since Bruno Fernandes looks like a man who could do with some rest, perhaps Joshua Zirkzee could operate as a second striker behind Benjamin Sesko, since Carrick doesn’t trust him with leading the line.

The Dutchman would thus operate between Shea Lacey (who should replace Bryan Mbeumo) and Marcus Rashford.

The latter could be the only player to keep his place in the team, even though Carrick has three other options in the form of Matheus Cunha, Dorgu, and the young Tynan Thompson.
