Manchester United are reportedly interested in Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, who has been one of the most exciting talents to emerge in Serie A in recent years.

The Red Devils have been fixated on their midfield revamp this summer. They have already signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, while a third midfielder could be on the way.

INEOS also addressed the goalkeeping department by poaching Karl Darlow on a free transfer. The Welshman will replace Altay Bayindir (who was loaned to Celta Vigo) as Senne Lammens’ backup.

The club is also expected to make a move upfront if Joshua Zirkzee leaves, and buy a left-back to rotate with Luke Shaw.

Man United ask about Giorgio Scalvini

Unlike all other departments, observers expect Man Utd’s centre-back options to remain intact. The club sold Tyler Fredricson to Lausanne-Sport, but Michael Carrick’s main five defenders should stay put. These are Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro, and Ayden Heaven.

But according to reliable Italian journalist Damiano Er Faina, Man Utd have also ‘requested’ Scalvini.

This suggests that MUFC officials have enquired about the young Italian defender, who has been ‘destined for greatness’, at least according to his former head coach, Gian Piero Gasperini.

Interestingly, Scalvini has been heavily linked with Newcastle United over the past few days, so it remains to be seen if Man Utd can sabotage their rivals’ plans.

Is Scalvini a realistic target for Man Utd

After making his senior debut at the tender age of 17, Scalvini was viewed as Italy’s next great defender. Unfortunately for the young man, injuries have derailed his progress, and at the age of 22, he still has a long way to go before fulfilling his early promise.

That being said, the Atalanta youth product is still highly regarded in Serie A and is already a regular feature with the Italian national team.

In the past, La Dea had raised a wall to prevent any suitors from snatching him away, but the club has become much more lenient on this front following Gasperini’s departure.

Scalvini could also struggle for playing time under Maurizio Sarri, whose 4-3-3 formation will limit the young man’s chances.

However, Man Utd don’t really need another centre-back at the moment, as they already have two young defenders to hone in Yoro and Heaven.

The landscape could drastically change next summer, especially if Maguire and MUFC decide to end their collaboration, or if De Ligt and Martinez continue to struggle with injuries.

Scalvini could be a natural replacement for the Argentine thanks to his ball-playing abilities. While he’s right-footed, his on-the-ball technique has allowed him to play comfortably on either side of a three-man backline.

Therefore, United could try to set the stage for a future onslaught, but this summer, Scalvini’s arrival remains unlikely
