The final whistle in Paisley on Saturday night brought an end to a fiercely contested match in which Celtic had to bounce back from going a goal behind to claim all three points and extend their Scottish Premiership winning run to five victories from five games so far.

That is a record that Hoops boss Martin O’Neill will be looking to extend further tomorrow night (Wednesday, September 9) when the Bhoys travel to McDiarmid Park to face the newly-promoted St Johnstone (KO 8pm).

You would have to rewind almost 26 years to find the last time that Martin O’Neill faced St Johnstone in a league match, a 2-1 home win for the Celts against the Perth Saints on January 19, 2001.

Though much has undoubtedly changed in the decades since that match took place at Celtic Park back in the early 2000s, Martin O’Neill’s determination to win is just the same, and the Celtic boss looked ahead to tomorrow night’s match and gave an update on squad injuries when he spoke to the media at Lennoxtown this afternoon.

He said: “It’s been years rather than days since I’ve faced St Johnstone! I saw them on the opening day of the season and I thought they played really well against Kilmarnock. I watched their game against Hibs too.

“They’re good and they have a really talented, young manager who wants to do well. They want to play football and they’re committed to it.

“We’ve had Kasper (Høgh) back in the last couple of days. Kieran (Tierney) did a little bit of work with us this morning, so we’ll see how they are.

“We’ve got a couple of other fitness issues with players, but we’ll try and go as strongly as we possibly can.”
