Manchester City were without Erling Haaland today as they went down 2-nil to Liverpool at the Etihad. He has now missed Manchester City’s past two matches against Real Madrid and Arne Slot’s side. Speaking after his team’s defeat Pep Guardiola is hopeful of having his team’s most important attacking player back for their Premier League fixture against Tottenham. Haaland has been missed by Manchester City and that stood out at the Etihad today.

Speaking after his team’s loss to Liverpool Pep Guardiola explained why Haaland missed today’s match. The City manager said Haaland still hasn’t recovered from the knee injury he picked up against Newcastle. But he is hopeful of having his top scorer back Tottenham. Guardiola explained: “It was] a moment in Newcastle he made an action that moved his knee. Apparently, it’s not dangerous because all examinations say it’s fine, but he didn’t feel fine. I have a feeling it will be soon [when he is back] because [on Saturday] he trained and made some really good movements. But he said to us that he’s not ready and I have to respect that. Hopefully, with Spurs and in the next games, he can help us.

Manchester City sorely missed Erling Haaland during today’s match. Although they dominated possession they lacked a player who could pose consistent problems to Liverpool’s defence. There was no target for City’s wingers and they did suffer due to that fact. The hope is that Haaland can recover from his knee issue to play at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday night.

Outside of Rodri, Erling Haaland is arguably Manchester City’s most important player. We have seen exactly why in City’s past two games against Real Madrid and Liverpool. The hope is that Haaland can return sooner rather than later to help his team on the pitch.
