In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey mentioned that Manchester City are in the running to sign Twente defender Ruud Nijstad. It is understood that the Mancunian club would have to rival Chelsea, Newcastle United and Barcelona in the race to sign the Dutch centre-back next summer.

Nijstad’s Impressive Rise In Dutch Football

Nijstad has come through the youth ranks of Twente and has done well to establish himself as an important member of their first team. The Dutch talent has picked up one assist in 10 matches for the Dutch club in the league this season across multiple competitions.

The 18-year-old is currently among the best young centre-backs in Dutch football. Therefore, Man City would do well to get a deal done for him next summer.

His current contract at the Dutch club will run out at the end of next season, which could open the door for the Mancunian outfit to sign him on the cheap later this year.

Manchester City Are In The Running For Nijstad: Is He A Prospect For The Future?

Nijstad is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required and can even play his way out from the back.

Standing at 1.93m, the Dutch sensation can use his powerful frame to win a few aerial duels for his team. However, he is still quite raw and would need time to prove his worth in the Premier League if Man City manage to snap him up next summer.

We can expect Nijstad to bring more quality and depth to Pep Guardiola’s defence in the long run. He is already good enough to serve as a good, rotational piece in Man City’s match-day squad.

At 18, Nijstad has got the potential to be a future star in English football. He is undoubtedly a prospect to watch out for in the future. Thus, Guardiola would be wise to acquire his services at the end of this campaign. However, Man City has to be patient with his development before they can unlock the best out of the talented defender.
