Erling Haaland’s future is once again being pulled into the uncertainty surrounding Manchester City, and this time FC Barcelona have more than reputation or ambition to justify their interest.

The Norwegian has been linked with the Catalans for years, usually as an aspirational signing rather than a realistic piece of squad planning. But Barça’s attack has changed considerably under Hansi Flick, and if circumstances in Manchester ever made Haaland attainable, there is now a clearer argument for how he could actually fit.

According to SPORT, speculation in England over City’s uncertain future has already led to several leading players being mentioned in connection with Barcelona and Real Madrid, and it is no surprise that Haaland, inevitably, is the headline name.

A difficult deal

There is nothing straightforward about a potential deal as the striker is contracted to The Etihad until 2034, there is no reported clause that would automatically free him in the event of relegation, and Manchester City would hardly allow one of their most valuable players to leave cheaply. As of yet, neither Barcelona nor Madrid are reported to have made an approach.

From Barca’s perspective, however, the tactical attraction is obvious as Flick’s side can overwhelm opponents through movement, aggressive pressing and combinations around the penalty area, but they do not always possess a fixed reference who forces both centre-backs to defend the six-yard box. Haaland would immediately provide one.

His presence would also change the spaces available to Barcelona’s wide attackers. With defenders reluctant to leave Haaland isolated inside the area, Lamine Yamal could receive more one-versus-one situations on the right, while runners from midfield would have greater freedom to attack gaps around the Norwegian.

A gamechanger for Hansi Flick

There is another dimension, too as Barcelona increasingly encounter opponents prepared to defend deep and surrender possession. Against those sides, Haaland’s movement across the front post, aerial threat and ability to finish from limited touches would offer a different solution from the more fluid forwards currently available to Flick.

He would also give Barca an outlet when opponents press high. A direct ball into space behind the defensive line suddenly becomes far more dangerous when Haaland is the player chasing it.

However, that does not make a transfer imminent, or even likely. But if Manchester City’s situation eventually changes the striker’s position, Barcelona would no longer be looking at Haaland simply because he is one of football’s biggest names. They could look at him because, tactically, he may now be exactly the type of striker this team is missing.
