  • The Etihad Stadium is currently undergoing a further £300 million redevelopment
  • The new-look arena will feature a hotel, museum, megastore, roof-walk, and expansion
  • Manchester City hope to unveil the new stand in some capacity this season

Officials within the Etihad Stadium are continuing to expect the formal opening of their expanded North Stand to take place this season, according to a new update.

The £300 million redevelopment of the Etihad Stadium is rapidly nearing its final phase, with the North Stand expansion set to increase the ground’s overall seated capacity to over 61,000 seats.

Following the installation of nearly 8,000 additional seats earlier this season, the focus has simultaneously shifted to the surrounding entertainment destination infrastructure, including a 400-bed hotel operated by Radisson, covered fan zone, new club museum, and megastore.

When could the Etihad’s North Stand expansion open?

The complete precinct – including a roof walk experience and renovated City Square – is on track for a staggered grand opening throughout the remainder of the year, solidifying the Etihad Campus as a year-round global leisure hub alongside the adjacent Co-op Live arena.

Now, according to the Manchester Evening News’ Simon Bajkowski, while Manchester City need to hold test events with the expanded North Stand, and that various checks are met, the brand new area of the stadium is set to open in some capacity within the ‘coming weeks’.

What could the expanded Etihad Stadium mean for the club?

The expansion of the North Stand could provide Pep Guardiola’s side with a vital psychological and atmospheric edge as they navigate a high-stakes run-in to the season across competitions at the Etihad Stadium.

Club officials will be hopeful of the expanded section of the stadium creating a significantly more intimidating wall of sound for visiting teams, although will not be available in time for the FA Cup Quarter-Final against Liverpool on April 4.

Given the scale of test events required, a potential title-decider against Arsenal on April 19 is also likely to be deemed as an unlikely launch match for the expanded stadium.

However, by boosting the noise levels and cramming around 7,000 additional fans into the North Stand, the redevelopment will further transform the Etihad Stadium into a more atmospheric cauldron for the future of the football club.
