The current Manchester City squad, although rebuilt, is filled with leaders and players who have achieved Champions League success. Rodri, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Rico Lewis, Nathan Ake, and John Stones were all a part of Manchester City’s Champions League triumph during the 22/23 season. Mateo Kovacic has tasted Champions League success three times with Real Madrid and once with Chelsea. Of course, Pep Guardiola knows what it takes to win the Champions League as a player and as a manager. City also signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG last summer. The Italian keeper played a vital role in PSG’s successful Champions League campaign last season.
Speaking ahead of City’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid, Donnarumma has spoken of what it takes to win the competition. Donnarumma’s experience and shot-stopping ability will play a key role tonight at the Bernabeu and for the remainder of this season for Pep Guardiola’s side.
Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma faced the media yesterday ahead of City’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg match against Real Madrid. Drawing on his experience of playing a key role in PSG’s Champions League triumph last season, the Italian international explained that every detail needs to be covered go a long way in determining a team’s success in the Champions League. He explained: “There are some teams that can make it to the finals and that’s what happens in the Champions League, there are many tough teams. If we speak about last season, nobody thought that PSG could be a strong candidate to win the final, but things can change.”
“It depends on timing and how fit the team is. I think we need to be able to manage some situations possible and now we are about to play games where you are in or out, so we need to manage it properly.”
“We can make less mistakes because every single detail could make the difference. In the Champions League, details are everything. How able you are to make as few mistakes as possible?”
Manchester City know all too well that any mistake in the Champions League can doom their campaign. Before City won the competition in Istanbul in 2023 against Inter Milan, Pep Guardiola’s side was often considered the best team in Europe. But they failed to win the Champions League as little details, errors, late goals, and a host of other factors went against them. That can happen in the Champions League. A key to a team’s success in the competition is riding their luck and making sure that every single detail is covered. Gianluigi Donnarumma knows this, as he explained yesterday.
As Manchester City bid to go deep in this season’s UEFA Champions League, and maintain their chase for honours in three other competitions, Gianluigi Donnarumma has a vital role to play in goal. There will be times when City’s defence will be breached. That will likely happen tonight against Real Madrid. City need Donnarumma to make the vitals saves that he is capable of. Donnarumma has already made a string of huge saves this season. His saves against Liverpool at Anfield and against Newcastle in City’s 2-1 win immediately come to mind. Donnarumma also has to command his area at set-pieces which he has done this throughout this season.
Manchester City are fortunate to have a host of players in their squad who have achieved Champions League success. Gianluigi Donnarumma is one of those. The Italian keeper explained yesterday what is vital to a team’s success in Europe. Starting tonight at the Bernabeu, if Donnarumma can control what he can control, it may help City get on their way to overcoming a familiar foe in the Champions League.
