Suggestions that Manchester City have agreed personal terms with Gianluigi Donnarumma are wide of the mark, according to the club.
The latest speculation around the Italian goalkeeper surfaced in recent days, with reports claiming that Manchester City had struck an agreement with the Paris Saint-Germain star and his representatives.
That development came amid increasing doubts surrounding the future of Ederson, who remains the subject of strong transfer interest from Galatasaray, and has seen James Trafford take his starting role in the club’s opening pairing of Premier League matches this month.
Manchester City’s goalkeeping department has been under more scrutiny than ever this summer, with Stefan Ortega also considering his long-term future after establishing himself as a reliable deputy across multiple competitions.
Pep Guardiola and his staff are now weighing up whether to refresh their options between the sticks, despite their preference being to retain the services of Ederson into the Brazilian’s final year of contract at the club.
As for Gianluigi Donnrumma, the Italian has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League, but despite evident interest from Etihad Stadium officials as he looks to exit the French capital, one line of reporting appears wide of the mark.
According to the Manchester Evening News’ Tyrone Marshall, Manchester City have now denied claims that they have agreed personal terms with Donnarumma as they continue to consider a revamp of their goalkeeping department.
Should City’s long-serving number one in Ederson depart this summer, City will likely be forced into the market for a new goalkeeper, and urgently proceed in talks over a deal for Donnarumma.
For now, the club’s stance appears to be one of patience rather than urgency. Pep Guardiola has shown confidence in James Trafford’s development since his return from Burnley, and the 22-year-old may yet play a bigger role if Ederson leaves.
In the coming days, much will depend on how transfer talks with other clubs evolve. If Galatasaray present a serious offer for Ederson, Manchester City could accelerate their search for a replacement.
But until then, it seems as though speculation about Gianluigi Donnarumma’s future will remain just that – speculation – as the Premier League giants continue to weigh up their finals steps in a busy summer market which comes to a close at the end of the week.
