Young Manchester City midfielder Sverre Nypan has made an impressive start to his loan spell at Middlesbrough. Nypan had made several impressive cameos off the bench for Rob Edwards’ side. His technical and tactical ability has stood out when he was on the pitch for Boro. The biggest compliment that can be given to Nypan so far is that the young midfielder looks right at home playing against seasoned professionals in the Championship.
Although Nypan had made several impressive appearances off the bench for Middlesbrough, the question was how he would fare in his first start for the Championship leaders. That answer came in Middlesbrough’s recent 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion. Based on Nypan’s performance in his team’s win, it seems that Manchester City have a gem on their hands.
Sverre Nypan played 80 minutes in his first start for Middlesbrough. He played as a dual number ten alongside Tommy Conway behind striker David Strelec for Boro. Nypan’s movement in the final third caught the eye. He was a constant threat to the West Brom defence with his intelligent runs and ability to drift into the half spaces when Boro had possession. That side of Nypan’s game is well developed, especially considering his age.
In possession, Nypan was calm and poised on the ball. He completed 19/24 of his passes and helped Boro dominate possession while he was on the pitch. Nypan also completed 2/3 dribbles against West Brom in a lively display. Nypan’s quality in possession was well-known when he signed for City from Rosenberg. That attribute does form the basis of his play alongside his intelligent movement as a player.
Where Sverre Nypan also impressed was that he held his own physically against West Brom. He won 3/4 duels, and that shows that he has tenacity in his game to go with his technical ability. Nypan’s physicality should see Nypan grow into English football.
Sverre Nypan has impressed for Middlesbrough so far this season. His first start for Boro saw him put in another impressive display. The young Norwegian midfielder has quickly established himself as a member of Rob Edwards’ squad. The 25/26 season is a key season in Nypan’s development, and he looks set to seize the opportunity in front of him. The test for Nypan will come when the grind of the Championship season kicks in, but as of right now, he is making an impression at Boro.
From a Manchester City point of view, they look to have another young gem on their hands in Sverre Nypan. He arrived at City as a highly regarded midfield prospect from Rosenberg. If he continues his strong form for Boro across this season, he could quickly play his way into Pep Guardiola’s squad sooner rather than later.
