Erling Haaland put in a subdued performance for Manchester City at Old Trafford as they slumped to a 2-0 derby defeat to Manchester United yesterday. Haaland wasn’t alone in this, but he was well below his best before he was taken off for the final ten minutes of yesterday’s match. Haaland has now scored only one goal in his past seven matches, and that came from the penalty spot against Brighton. Pep Guardiola’s side needs more from their top scorer, and it has to come soon to help City get back on track in the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola revealed after his team’s impressive win over Newcastle at St. James’ Park that Erling Haaland is currently battling fatigue. Haaland has carried a heavy workload this season, but his performance yesterday was one of his worst for the season. He couldn’t get into the 198th Manchester derby at all, and that didn’t help Manchester City’s cause yesterday.
Erling Haaland was starved of service yesterday. There is no doubt about that. But the Norwegian international couldn’t make an impact at all in the match. He couldn’t win his duels against Harry Maguire or Lisandro Martinez. Haaland also couldn’t keep hold of the ball at all during the match at Old Trafford. Outside of a blocked shot in the second half, it was a barren afternoon for Haaland and Pep Guardiola’s side. Unfortunately, Haaland’s performance was typical of his team’s display yesterday. It was a poor afternoon for Haaland and Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Erling Haaland is a leader at Manchester City. He has earned that right, and now his team needs him to lift them. Haaland isn’t alone in that particular boat, but if he can elevate his game, his teammates will follow his lead. Haaland is an inspirational figure in this City team. Despite the fact that Haaland is fatigued, he needs to dig deep to help his team. If he does that, and quickly, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see City quickly snap their four-game run without a win in the Premier League.
Manchester City and Erling Haaland weren’t at their best in their defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. Pep Guardiola’s side needs Haaland to step up as his performance yesterday wasn’t anywhere near his lofty standards. Haaland has hit a dry spell in front of goal, but you do sense that when he comes out of it, he and his team will quickly get going again.
