Manchester City have reached a total agreement to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the summer transfer window, as per reports.
Donnarumma was identified as Manchester City’s priority replacement for Ederson should the latter leave this summer, with a transfer to Fenerbahce picking up pace on deadline day after a full verbal agreement was reached for the Turkish giants to sign the Brazilian in the early hours of Monday.
City signed academy graduate James Trafford from Burnley for £27 million in July to bolster their goalkeeping department, with Marcus Bettinelli also brought in to replace the departed Scott Carson as third-choice goalkeeper in June.
However, after failing to engineer a transfer to Saudi Arabia last summer, Ederson is looking increasingly likely to move to Fenerbahce, which has propelled the Gianluigi Donnarumma domino to propel at the Etihad Stadium.
Donnarumma has fallen out of favour at the Parc des Princes just months on from playing an instrumental role in the Ligue 1 giants’ premier UEFA Champions League crown, with a contract dispute leading to a decision to part ways between all parties.
PSG officials are understood to have held firm on their stance against offering Donnarumma an increment on his current wages, with the 26-year-old demanding a significant pay hike to extend his contract beyond 2026.
However, Donnarumma bid farewell to the Parc des Princes faithful a few weeks ago and after a period of uncertainty over where the Italy international would be playing his football for the seasons to come, Manchester City have won the race to sign Donnarumma.
According to the information of journalist Fabrizio Romano, an agreement is now in place to make Gianluigi Donnarumma a new goalkeeper for Manchester City, with a medical scheduled for Monday afternoon.
It remains to be seen how Manchester City’s pecking order in the goalkeeping department shapes up when Pep Guardiola and co return to action after the September international break, with James Trafford retaining his place in net in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion.
However, Guardiola admitted that the goalkeeping hierarchy remains open to change in the days leading to his side’s weekend defeat on the south coast, with Donnarumma boasting a much stronger CV than Trafford upon his arrival to the Etihad Stadium.
Upon his return to Manchester City from Burnley in July, Trafford was believed to have accepted that he would have to challenge the first-choice goalkeeper for the number one spot – and that could well be the case as Donnarumma edges closer to joining City.
Manchester City need as many winners and leaders in their dressing room as possible after a dreadful start to their 2025-26 campaign, with the loss to Brighton confirming the worst-ever start to a league season from a side led by Guardiola over the course of his managerial career.
