Rivals up against Manchester City for transfer targets have been using uncertainty surrounding Pep Guardiola to try and sway players away from the Etihad Stadium.
Uncertainty over Guardiola’s long-term future has increasingly become part of the wider Premier League discourse over the last few weeks, with rival clubs alert to any perceived vulnerability in City’s current cycle.
Despite the Catalan being under contract at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2027, the growing belief that this season could be his last has fed into external narratives around transition and potential instability.
City have seemingly been proactive in managing that perception, with senior figures reportedly working on contingency planning should Guardiola depart sooner than his contract stipulates, while reinforcing the message that the project extends beyond any one individual.
That approach has been reflected publicly through Manchester City’s continued confidence in the transfer market, and reports of background checks on potential managerial successors have not prevented City from pressing ahead with squad strengthening.
According to a new report from BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel, it is claimed that rival club executives have used the emerging narrative over Pep Guardiola’s uncertaint future to persuade players to ignore advances from the Etihad Stadium.
However, as seen through the signings of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi in January, City’s pitch remains among the most competitive around, and sources close to both deals say that a virtual guarantee of competing for the biggest trophies at City and consistent Champions League qualification proved pivotal in the decision-making process.
Elsewhere, Manchester City’s state-of-the-art infrastructure at the Etihad Campus and City Football Academy, alongside off-field ambitions, are further said to be key features of their pitch to new players.
The report underlines how City’s recruitment strategy has remained insulated from external noise circulated within mainstream media, with players and their representatives continuing to place significant value on the club’s stability, resources, and long-term competitiveness.
Even amid speculation surrounding Pep Guardiola and his future in English football, the broader Manchester City project appears to retain its appeal.
Looking ahead, the coming months could prove decisive both on and off the pitch, and should Guardiola clarify his future publicly, it would remove a key talking point rivals have attempted to exploit in negotiations.
