Real Madrid have been heavily linked with Manchester City midfielder over the past three years, but increasingly, this feels like it could be the summer that it happens. With Los Blancos in desperate need of a midfielder to dictate play, and Pep Guardiola departing the Etihad, the stars could be aligning for the Spain international to return to Spanish football.
After deciding not to invest in a midfielder for the two seasons after the exits of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, Real Madrid have come to the conclusion that at least one midfielder is required, and Rodri is certainly one of the best in the game. Los Blancos have been closely monitoring Rodri this season, coming off the back of an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Back at the Bernabeu, Fede Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga have failed to convince as partners for Aurelien Tchouameni.

Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena SER, Rodri was asked about potentially joining Real Madrid, and did not rule it out.
“It’s normal to have names of players from different clubs circulating. I’m the captain of the national team and I’m focused. It’s my job to lead Spain to win this World Cup. There might be some noise, but I’m going to concentrate on the World Cup and we’ll see what happens.”

Rodri has just a year left on his contract, and City have been keen to extend his deal for some time, hoping to wrap it up before the World Cup. If he does not do so, City may have to contemplate either losing him for free next summer, or selling him at a reduced price this year. Rodri turns 30 this year, and is likely looking at his last big contract, be it from City or Real Madrid.
