It’s that time of year again as the Manchester Derby is upon us once more with the Noisy Neighbours playing host to the Red Devils at the Etihad Stadium.
To say that things have not gone according to plan as of late for Pep Guardiola and his players would certainly be an understatement, as Manchester City fell to defeat at the hands of Brighton last time out.
The match opened with an Erling Haaland strike from close-range in the 34th minute, with the Seagulls levelling the scoring and then eventually taking the lead in the second-half, through scoring efforts from James Milner and Brajan Gruda.
That result at the American Express Stadium would be the second consecutive loss for Manchester City in the opening three games of the brand new season, seeing them slot into the middle of the table and coming into this weekend’s contest below Ruben Amorim’s men.
On the other side of Sunday’s ticket sits the red side of Manchester, who will enter the derby off the back of a grizzly 3-2 home win over Burnley, as Bruno Fernandes secured all three points via a penalty in the dying embers of the match.
Ahead of the highly-anticipated Manchester derby this weekend, here is everything you need to know including how you can watch and keep up to date with proceedings live, as well as early team news for both sides.
The first Manchester Derby of the new season will take place on Sunday 14 September, with kick-off at the Etihad Stadium between Manchester City and Manchester United scheduled for 16:30 BST.
The Premier League has confirmed that Anthony Taylor will be the match referee for Sunday’s clash at the Etihad Stadium, while John Brooks will occupy the Video Assistant Referee role from Stockley Park.

Given the quality of players that occupy the field at the Etihad Stadium, it was not a surprise to see quite a few represent their respective countries over the course of the most-recent international break, with Omar Marmoush among those stars.
However, during the opening stages of Egypt’s eventual 0-0 draw against Burkina Faso, the 26-year-old suffered an injury to his knee, which took him out of that match and will keep him out of Sunday’s clash against Manchester United.
However, the likes of Savinho, Phil Foden, Nico O’Reilly, Rico Lewis, Josko Gvadiol, and Abdukodir Khusanov could all be getting ready to feature on Sunday afternoon, given their confirmed return to training ground action at the City Football Academy this weekend.
While the transfer window has been closed for some time, City’s newest signing Gianluigi Donnarumma has yet to make his debut, which could change this weekend having began training ground work for the first time at the Etihad Stadium.
Among those to also return to training this week were Marcus Bettinelli and Kalvin Phillips, while a quartet of Rayan Ait-Nouri, John Stones, Rayan Cherki, and Mateo Kovacic are either in doubt or entirely ruled out for the contest this weekend.
Pep Guardiola: “When you change 10 players in a period of four or five months, everything needs to be settled, fixed, and co-ordinated. We are doing many, many good things, but still we have to be more consistent. But step by step, we’ll do it.”
On his squad size: “I have 16 players available now, yeah, it’s easier [to pick a team]. I don’t have 26.”
On Gianluigi Donnarumma: “I will not demand from Gigio [Donnarumma] to do something he’s uncomfortable [with]. We’re talking about the best player I’ve ever seen in distribution short and long in Ederson. We didn’t take Gigio to do what Ederson has done. Gigio has another qualities.”
On whether Donnarumma starts against Manchester United: “We’ll see.”
On James Trafford after signing Gianluigi Donnarumma: “He’s a keeper for Man City… The season is so long. Now we start the real season with many games, and everybody will be involved. They don’t believe it, but it’s going to happen.”
Manchester City and Manchester United have met a total of 195 times across the course of their respective histories, with the Sky Blues emerging victorious in 61 of those contests, drawing 55 clashes, and losing 79 meetings.
Pep Guardiola’s side are winless in the last four Manchester derbies however, last winning a meeting with United back in March 2024 en route to their fourth consecutive Premier League title with a 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium.
Last time out, United and City ended even with a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in April 2025, while the last meeting at the Etihad Stadium resulted in a 1-2 victory for Ruben Amorim’s side courtesy of late goals from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.
