Liverpool’s midfield is set for a further shakeup following the departure of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan.

The 25-year-old joins the Italian champions for £30m - and there are indications that the midfield outgoings won’t end there.

Stefan Bajcetic is expected to reach a deal to rejoin Celta Vigo while James McConnell could end up leaving on loan before the window slams shut.

You would imagine that Andoni Iraola can ill-afford any more headline departures from his midfield. But sporting director Richard Hughes could come under pressure if Manchester City firm up their interest in Alexis Mac Allister.

Man City considering Mac Allister deal

BBC Sport is reporting that the 27-year-old Argentina playmaker is wanted by new City boss Enzo Maresca amid a summer of big changes at the Etihad Stadium.

“There will be incomings, with City seemingly closing in on the signing of Lille's Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and holding an interest in Bournemouth's Alex Scott as well as Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister,” the report reads.

Man City hold summer midfielder clearout

Rodri has left for Barcelona, Bernardo Silva has joined Real Madrid and Tijjani Reijnders has concluded a deal with Al-Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia.

Although Elliot Anderson has been signed at considerable expense City still need more Premier League-ready midfielders and Mac Allister fits the bill.

Liverpool are currently unsure what to do over the No10 - whose contract expires in 2028. There are no talks pencilled in and if no deal is signed then there will be little option other than to consider a sale.

Mac Allister could get squeezed out under Iraola

Mac Allister has been at Anfield since 2023 - joining from Brighton for £35m. Following a successful spell on Merseyside - including the Premier League title - Liverpool will be expecting to bank around double that in the event of a sale.

This season it would appear that Florian Wirtz is set to play a central role - reducing the number of available midfield slots to two.

Considering Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch have each inked fresh deals at considerable cost it can be reasonably assumed that they will be starting.

Mac Allister could therefore be squeezed out of the lineup in favour of that duo and Wirtz further forward. Therefore an attractive bid - even from a Premier League rival - could well be a welcome development inside the corridors of power at the AXA Training Centre.
