Officials from within the Etihad Stadium are said to be ‘working on’ a potential summer transfer to sign one of Liverpool’s prominent Academy-produced names.
The landscape of the Northwest rivalry could be set for a rare crossover as the summer transfer window approaches, with direct business between Manchester City and Liverpool historically scarce.
However, contractual uncertainty surrounding some of the Merseysiders’ key figures has opened a window of opportunity for clubs.
Manchester City, whose recruitment is now led by the strategy of Hugo Viana, are reportedly scanning the market for technically proficient talent to ensure squad depth remains at a world-class level.
And in an ongoing season where the title race is reaching a fever pitch – with City set to host Arsenal in a monumental ‘decider’ on Sunday, April 19 – staff are simultaneously planning for the forthcoming 2026/27 campaign.
Now, according to claims from Anfield Watch, Manchester City are one of several top Premier League clubs working on a deal for Liverpool’s Curtis Jones, who will enter the final year of his Merseyside contract this summer – and as such could leave the club.
Unsurprisingly, it is pointed out that those at the Etihad Stadium represent the biggest club to have asked around about Jones’ availability, while both Chelsea and Newcastle United are another two, with more having ‘at least checked in on’ the player.
Curtis Jones has found himself in a peculiar position under Arne Slot, and despite showing plenty of promise in his 28 top-flight appearances this term, a consistent role has been hard to come by.
The midfielder was recently withdrawn at half-time during Liverpool’s recent 2-0 win over Fulham with an injury issue, adding further frustration to a season where he has played under half of the available Premier League minutes.
With no news of a contract extension on the horizon at Anfield – and fellow midfielders at the forefront of negotiation talk – signs point toward a potential exit.
Whether or not interest from Manchester City proves to be accurate remains to be seen, particularly given the Etihad Stadium’s interest in the likes of Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali.
