United breeze past Sabah in easy win at Old Trafford

Manchester United enjoyed a smooth return to the Champions League, beating competition debutants Sabah to start the league phase in style.

After a rather awkward opening exchanges, the breakthrough for Man United came midway through the first half when Matheus Cunha got on the end of Patrick Dorgu’s cross for a close range tap-in.

Sabah should have equalised when Joy Lance Mickels wasted a golden chance at the back post after good work from Kaheem Parris. That miss proved costly as Man Utd put the gam to bed with two goals in quick succession right before half-time.

First, Youri Tielemans picked out captain Bruno Fernandes for his fourth goal of the season, before Benjamin Sesko scored for the second game in a row after rounding Stas Pokatilov and slotting the ball into an empty net.

Perhaps with one eye on Sunday’s Manchester derby, Man Utd took their foot off the pedal slightly after the break but did manage to add a fourth when Lisandro Martinez seized on a goalkeeping mistake to put his name on the scoresheet.
