Manchester City and Manchester United both advanced to Friday's knockout stages on the second day of the inaugural World Sevens tournament in Portugal.

The top two teams from each of the two four-team groups advanced on Thursday night.

United claimed a sudden-death 7-6 penalty shootout win over Paris Saint-Germain to top Group B after 30 minutes of added time and five of Golden Goal extra time could not determine a winner.

Lisa Naalsund's second successful spot-kick proved the winner after Grace Geyoro struck the crossbar with her second attempt.

City finished second in Group A after falling 3-1 to group winners Bayern Munich in their third-round evening kick-off.

Linda Dallmann fired Bayern in front in the second minute and although her goal was instantly cancelled out by Aoba Fujino, Julia Zigiotti Olme restored the Germans' lead after the break and Maria Plattner added the cushion three minutes before time.

Earlier, City survived a nervy 6-5 penalty shootout of their own with Ajax to book their spot in the semi-finals after a 2-2 deadlock could not be broken in extra time.

United had already progressed through with a 3-1 win over Benfica in the afternoon thanks to Simi Awujo's brace and Celin Bizet's opener.
