Manchester United could look to sign Conor Gallagher in January if Atletico Madrid are open to letting him leave on a loan deal, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs.
The Red Devils were linked with the England international midfielder in the summer as head coach Ruben Amorim looked to bolster his squad options at the Old Trafford club.
Man United offered to sign Gallagher on loan but Atletico were only open to selling him and will ask for around £35 million from suitors in January.
“If Athleti open the door to a loan formula for Conor Gallagher mid-season, I think that’s a deal Manchester United will do,” Jacobs said on the United Stand.
“If they’re to buy him, the price is in excess of £35m, and it remains to be seen whether Manchester United choose to spend that money in January.”
Amorim wanted to sign a defensive midfielder all summer, and he had Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba as his top target, while Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton was also on his radar.
However, a deal did not materialise for either player and getting any of them in January will be impossible from the look of things.
Gallagher could be a feasible target as he is not first-choice at Atletico having started only four times in 12 games across all competitions in 2025-26.
Man United won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time under Amorim following recent victories over Sunderland and Liverpool.
They host Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday and will attempt to make it three wins in a row.
A win against the Seagulls and an improved form between now and the January transfer window will not change their plans as they really could do with reinforcements in midfield.
Adding Gallagher to their squad could come in handy and the Red Devils will continue to monitor his situation in the coming weeks.
