Manchester United youngster Rhys Bennett is set for a summer exit, with Fleetwood Town prepared to provide him an opportunity to continue his development.

The 20-year-old central defender returned to United this summer on the back of an underwhelming loan spell with Stockport County. He moved to the League Two in January and only managed to add one senior appearance under his belt during Stockport’s promotion run.

Regardless, Erik ten Hag placed his trust in Bennett by including the academy talent in his squad for the pre-season tour.

The highly-rated defender was handed minutes against both Arsenal and Liverpool in the United States.

However, during the ongoing summer transfer window, United have added star defenders Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt to their ranks.

As such, Bennett, who led the Red Devils to FA Youth Cup triumph two years ago, is unlikely to get any first-team action under Ten Hag this season.

Both United and the player certainly recognise that, having decided it is best for him to move elsewhere temporarily to gain more taste of senior football.

According to ManchesterWorld, Bennett is set to join Fleetwood Town on loan for the remainder of the season.

The League Two outfit have reportedly chased the United academy product for several weeks and are expected to get the deal over the line before transfer deadline day.

Bennett was only handed a new long-term contract at Old Trafford last summer before being named in Ten Hag’s Premier League matchday squad against West Ham United last December.

He has always been on Ten Hag’s radar and perhaps a successful loan stint under Fleetwood boss and ex-Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam would help him push his name into the first-team plans next term.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming that apart from Bennett, United are also looking for suitable loan moves for Elyh Harrison and Sonny Aljofree.
