Manchester United duo thank Gareth Southgate in farewell message | OneFootball

Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have thanked Gareth Southgate following his decision to step down as England manager this afternoon.

It feels like it was the worst-kept secret in football. Pundits spoke about how Southgate could remain in charge of the national team had the Three Lions gone all the way at Euro 2024.

On Sunday night, England failed to overcome Spain in the final, losing 2-1 after a shoddy performance. Typical of what they had shown throughout the tournament.

Southgate had his most trusted lieutenants throughout his time as England manager. And, to his credit, he ensured England made finals at major tournaments. He lacked the managerial expertise to cross the line.

No matter who steps into the job next, Southgate will be a tough act to follow. That sounds ridiculous because I’d have him nowhere near the United job, and hated when we were linked with him during the uncertainty over Erik ten Hag.

United duo Maguire and Mainoo have been quick to react to Southgate’s announcement, with both players taking to Instagram to wish him well.

Maguire, who missed out on the tournament in Germany because of injury, was a key part of Southgate’s project, starring at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, as well as the European Championship in 2021.

He wrote: “You made us all believe again – memories that will last forever. Thank you boss.”

Meanwhile, Mainoo was handed his senior England debut by Southgate in March before being named in the squad for Euro 2024. He initially featured on the bench at the tournament before starting against Slovakia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Spain in the latter rounds.

“Thank you for everything,” said Mainoo on social media.
