Manchester United have the financial capacity to sign Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap before recouping funds from sales this summer.
The financial strength of the Red Devils this summer is uncertain with doubt over whether the club will be competing in European competition. United are set for their lowest-ever Premier League finish and first bottom-half finish since 1990. With five games to go, the club are already guaranteed their lowest points total of the Premier League era.
Despite that disappointing domestic campaign, Champions League qualification can still be achieved by winning the Europa League. United face Athletic Bilbao in their semi-final first leg on Thursday night. A place in next season’s competition will free up significantly more funds to invest, given the lucrative reward of playing Champions League football.
However, United have the resources to make early signings regardless of their success in the Europa League. Ruben Amorim’s side have launched an early move to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while there is strong interest in Ipswich striker Liam Delap.
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has reported that United are optimistic about signing both players early in the transfer window and can finance those deals without the need for sales. Both players have release clauses in their contracts. Cunha’s is set at £62.5m and Delap will be available for £30m, once Ipswich’s imminent relegation is confirmed.
The early desire to do business will encourage Manchester United supporters after a challenging campaign.
The focus will then turn to outgoings with Jonny Evans, Tom Heaton, Victor Lindelof and Christian Eriksen all set to depart as free agents.
Offers will also be listened to for Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho as additional funds are sought to strengthen the squad.
