As reported earlier today, following Ronald Araujo’s decision to continue at the club, FC Barcelona could open the doors for Eric Garcia or Andreas Christensen to leave this month.

Garcia has been attracting serious interest from Girona, where he spent the last season on loan and impressed.

As for Christensen, he continues to have admirers in the Premier League where he built a solid reputation with Chelsea. In fact, one of those admirers may even have made a move to explore a possible transfer this month.

Manchester United establish contact

Indeed, according to SPORT, Manchester United have made contact with Barcelona in recent weeks about a potential move for Christensen in the ongoing January transfer window.

However, the report adds that there has been no formal offer sent in by the Premier League bigwigs for the Danish international.

Christensen has been out of action for nearly five months due to an ankle injury. The defender has played only 26 minutes so far this season but is all set to return to the squad this weekend against Getafe.

The former Chelsea international has often been praised by Barcelona manager Hansi Flick for his professionalism while he also offers versatility to the table with his ability to play as a defensive midfielder.

However, with his contract expiring in 2026 and there being a surplus of defensive personnel in the squad, an exit cannot be ruled out at this point.

Barcelona do need to free up some salary space this month as they plan to strengthen their attacking unit with Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford.

It will thus be interesting to see if they decide to part ways with Christensen to make room and whether the 28-year-old ends up moving the other way to Old Trafford.
