Michael Carrick hoping for returnees in short order after defeat on Humberside

A grim first day of the Premier League season saw Manchester United lose 2-0 to newly-promoted Hull City and suffer a fresh injury blow.

Amad Diallo becomes the club’s latest casualty after he picked up an injury in training last week, handing Michael Carrick an unneeded setback amid what has already been a frustrating start to the campaign.

Things are not all bad for the United boss, though. He has a chance to bounce back next week against another newly promoted side in Ipswich Town, and he seems set to welcome at least one injured first-team player back into the squad for the match.

United’s frustrating start to the season was mooted before kick-off as Amad Diallo was left out of the travelling squad to face Hull.

It was later revealed he had picked up a minor issue in training towards the end of last week, with reports suggesting the full extent of his problem is not yet known.

Carrick issued an update on his condition ahead of the Hull match: "He just picked up a niggle right at the end of the week, in training. We’ll assess that and see where he’s at.

"Hopefully, it won’t be too long but we’ll have to wait and see. He was in a good place, Amad.

"He was looking sharp and obviously looking forward to the season, so it’s disappointing but, unfortunately, that’s part of it. We’ve got the squad that we can cope with it, so we’ve got to keep moving and, hopefully, we’ll get Amad back soon."

Further clarity on his condition is expected when Carrick speaks later this week to preview the Ipswich match. It is hoped Diallo will be passed fit to face the Tractor Boys.

Mason Mount has not featured for United since suffering a foot injury in a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

The issue was described as a knock at the time, but it has now ruled Mount out for two weeks.

Speaking to preview the trip to Hull, though, Carrick said Mount was closing in on a return, suggesting he will be fit to face Ipswich.

He said United were “managing Mason a little bit, but he's very close, so it's touch and go for the weekend, really, if not, going into next week.

"He's picked up a little bit of a knock, it's no dramas. Maybe it's been a week or so, or 10 days or whatever it's been.

"We have got to have a squad that's strong enough to have a really good, top starting team with a depth to carry us through the season. Mason will be back very, very soon, if not immediately. So it's all good."

Matthijs de Ligt

Matthijs de Ligt has not played any competitive football since suffering a back injury in November, but he finally seems to be closing in on a return to the pitch.

He is back in first-team training, but Carrick has been keen to play down his chances of featuring for United anytime soon.

“Matta's obviously been out for a long period of time, but he's training and it's great to have him back,” he said.

“He won't be involved, but he's in good shape and moving in a good direction, so that's a good bonus for us really, at this stage, to have him back.”

Potential return date: Autumn/Winter 2026

Tom Heaton

Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton picked up an injury in the friendly clash with PSG, but it is not yet clear what issue he has suffered.

Per reports in the Manchester Evening News, it is feared what appeared to be an innocuous knock could be more sinister, and the player is undergoing tests.

The result of those tests is yet to be revealed, and Carrick did not speak on his condition this week.
