The likes of Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes, and Wayne Rooney have all criticised the Portuguese during his tenure at Old Trafford.

United sit 14th in the Premier League, having won just two of the opening six games.

They were beaten 3-1 by Brentford last time out, where new signing Benjamin Sesko netted his first goal for the club.

They take on Sunderland at Old Trafford this weekend, with the Black Cats riding high in fifth under Regis Le Bris.

Amorim acknowledged that previous results were not good enough, and again shrugged off scepticism over his system.

"It’s normal, we cannot run away from the results,” the Portuguese said of the criticism.

“Then you have the baggage from last season. Last season doesn't matter to me, in relation to the system we have already spoken about that.

“We had six games this season and we have lost three.

“If we lost against Arsenal because of the system? It’s your job to make the opinions.

“When you saw the game against City, was the first thought that you had when the game started about the system?

“I don't think you thought about the system at that moment, nor against Brentford. The way we concede goals, create chances, that has nothing to do with the system, that is my opinion.

I am not saying this team will do better in a different system, that's not my point. My point is if I look at the games we did not win, the most important thing when I watched the game is not that we lost because of the system. That is my opinion, then people have different opinions and that's ok.”

Asked if United were ‘disjointed’ in their defeat the Gtech Community Stadium, Amorim concurred, but bemoaned his side’s inconsistency.

"It was [disjointed against Brentford], but you cannot say one thing doesn’t work, when it works one weekend,” he continued.

“When things work one day and the other doesn’t. It is something about the way we do the same thing. We need to do the same thing, in the same way, every way, and we are not doing it the same every day.

“Some of you guys have a different opinion, but that's ok."
