Manchester United midfield prodigy Jayce Fitzgerald is reportedly on the brink of completing a loan switch to Rotherham United.

The versatile Fitzgerald has been at United since childhood, making good progress within the academy ranks.

While his best position is in midfield, he is versatile and has also been deployed in central defence to great effect. Fitzgerald’s style of play and trajectory have previously earned him comparisons with Barcelona and Spain legend Sergio Busquets.

Though he started out as a defender in his formative years, Busquets would go on to define the number six role and cement his legacy as one of the game’s all-time greats in that position.

Fitzgerald finds himself in a position where he has somewhat outgrown youth football but isn’t quite ready yet to make the step up to regular first-team football at United.

A loan move appears to be the logical next step in his development and according to Nathan Salt of the Daily Mail and journalist Micky Hugworth, the youngster is set to join Rotherham United.

Fitzgerald transfer development

Hugworth first wrote on X, “Rotherham United are set to sign Manchester united youngster Jayce Fitzgerald on loan.”

Salt added, “Manchester United are sending academy midfielder Jayce Fitzgerald to Rotherham United on loan.”

“The 19-year-old has never previously been out on loan but is keen to test himself in a senior set-up.”

“Rotherham developed Dan Gore last season.”

Fitzgerald made 16 Premier League 2 appearances last season, contributing two goals and one assist in that period.

Meanwhile, United return to action on Sunday when they host Ipswich Town at Old Trafford.
