Manchester United 3-2 Nottingham Forest: Fernandes Makes History at Old Trafford

Manchester United secured third place in the Premier League with a dramatic 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest, on an afternoon shaped by Bruno Fernandes’ brilliance, Casemiro’s farewell and another VAR argument that left Old Trafford restless.

It was chaotic, emotional and occasionally nervy, but United got the result Michael Carrick needed as he waits for confirmation over his long-term future.

Fernandes Joins Premier League Assist Royalty

Bruno Fernandes delivered the defining moment when his cross from the right was turned in by Bryan Mbeumo for United’s third goal. That assist took Fernandes to 20 for the Premier League season, level with Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

That is elite company. It is also a reminder of Fernandes’ relentless creative output, even in a season where United have often looked uneven.

Earlier, Mbeumo had wasted a clear chance from a Fernandes pass, leaving the captain face down on the turf in frustration. When the landmark finally arrived, United’s players rushed towards Fernandes almost before celebrating with the scorer.

Old Trafford Farewell Belongs to Casemiro

Casemiro’s substitution nine minutes from time brought the loudest emotional response. The Brazilian received a standing ovation as he made his way slowly to the touchline, shaking hands with team mates before Mason Mount replaced him.

It felt like a goodbye. If so, it was a fitting one.

Casemiro gave United authority, trophies and mentality at a time when the club badly needed senior presence. His legs may no longer cover the same ground, but his influence has been real.

VAR Row Adds Familiar Controversy

Manchester United had started quickly through Luke Shaw’s fifth minute opener, a rare Premier League goal for the left back. Morato then headed Nottingham Forest level before controversy arrived.

Diogo Dalot crossed for Mbeumo, who appeared to control the ball between his upper arm and side. His shot deflected into Matheus Cunha’s path, and Cunha finished first time.

Referee Michael Salisbury was sent to the monitor by VAR Matthew Donohue, but after lengthy checks, he stuck with his original decision. The explanation centred on the ball deflecting off Mbeumo’s hip.

Both sets of fans booed the delay. That told its own story. VAR continues to drain emotion from moments that should belong to football.

Forest Fight But United Hold Firm

Nottingham Forest refused to go quietly. Morgan Gibbs-White scored 12 minutes from time to make it 3-2, giving the visitors belief and United a final spell of anxiety.

Joshua Zirkzee almost added a fourth late on, while Dalot struck the base of the post in stoppage time. Had that gone in, Fernandes might have taken the Premier League assist record outright.

Instead, he must settle for history shared with legends, with one match still to play.

For Manchester United, this was a day of progress and reflection. Fernandes provided the numbers, Casemiro provided the emotion, and Carrick’s side provided enough control to finish the job. Third place matters. So does the feeling that United may finally be building something more coherent.
