The 17-year-old was given his debut by Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and it’s believed he could follow his former coach to Old Trafford in the future.

Like Viktor Gyokeres, Quenda has been heavily linked with United since Amorim’s arrival. The media outlets are trying to guess who the new head coach will be joining him after such a successful spell as Sporting boss, although he has already promised fans he won’t be signing any of their players in January.

Quenda has a €100m buyout clause but Portuguese clubs have been known to negotiate for fees lower than set release clauses.

Amorim left Lisbon with Sporting unbeaten in the Primeira Liga and on course to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages. Today, he takes charge of his first game at United, after travelling to Ipswich Town.

It will be an eye-opener for Amorim. Ipswich may be struggling this season, but they’ve played good football under Kieran McKenna after being promoted from the Championship. They’re bound to have teething problems at the start, but we know from having McKenna at United that they’ve got a very talented coach.

Quenda fits the right profile for United

Since INEOS took charge of football operations, we’ve seen the club focus more on young players. They spent big on Leny Yoro in the summer and made some big additions to the academy.

Quenda, 17, fits into United’s recent policy of targeting younger talent with the potential to grow, rather than experienced players past their best.

Like Yoro, Quenda is regarded as one of the best young players in Europe, which would explain why United would have an interest in signing him.

Quenda’s emergence onto the scene has happened very quickly, as Amorim only introduced him to the first team this season.

The youngster starred in Sporting’s 4-0 win over Man City in the Champions League, setting up one of Gyokeres’ goals from wing-back.

There will be a list of targets from Sporting by the summer.
