Manchester United held talks to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as a replacement for Erik ten Hag but both parties could not agree on a salary, according to The Athletic.
Following one league win in eight matches back in May 2024, the decision-makers at Man United opted to bring in a new manager to the Old Trafford club.
The Red Devils eventually identified De Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank, Marco Silva and Graham Potter as potential replacements for Ten Hag.
Man United settled for Tuchel and De Zerbi as their prime candidates, but the former was not ready to return to management, having just left Bayern Munich at the time.
De Zerbi became the front-runner for the job, and financial terms were discussed in line with what Man United felt was fair.
However, the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss rejected those terms, and the Red Devils chose not to improve them.
He ended up joining Marseille in June 2024, helping them to a second-place finish in Ligue 1 last season.
Man United stuck with Ten Hag, but a poor start to the season cost him his job. Ruben Amorim was appointed as his replacement a year ago today.
The 40-year-old was unable to hit the ground running upon taking over, with Man United finishing 15th in the Premier League at the end of last season.
The Red Devils struggled in the league at the start of the new campaign and were eliminated from the League Cup by Grimsby Town.
Amorim was under pressure at the time but has managed to turn things around, with five league wins in the last seven games giving Man United a much-needed boost.
They are sixth in the league table after nine games, level on points with Manchester City and six points behind leaders Arsenal.
Man United return to league action later today with a trip to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest, and they will be desperate to make it four league victories on the bounce.
