Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville has criticised the club’s senior players, arguing that their experienced core should be providing greater stability and leadership under manager Ruben Amorim.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville reflected on United’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest, which ended their recent three-match winning streak. The former defender suggested that United’s established players have failed to deliver the authority expected from a squad of their calibre.
“I think your spine is critical,” Neville said. “When I came into United, we had Schmeichel, Bruce, Pallister, Keane and Cantona. You knew where the strength was. This United side’s spine, Maguire, De Ligt, Casemiro, and Bruno Fernandes, should be doing a lot better.”
Neville noted that, while United’s forward line lacks experience, their central core is filled with seasoned internationals. “De Ligt’s played a mountain of games at the highest level. Maguire’s been a regular for England. Casemiro and Bruno have massive experience. They should be holding it together.”
He contrasted United’s inconsistency with Liverpool’s cohesion: “Liverpool have Alisson, Van Dijk, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, a spine that works.”
Neville’s comments underline growing frustration over United’s inability to translate experience into control, with Amorim still seeking balance from his senior players.
