Golden Arrows head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has put question marks on Peter Shalulile’s record-breaking penalty against Stellenbosch FC in Mamelodi Sundowns’ last league outing.

The prolific forward netted the only goal of the match from the spot to become the outright PSL all-time top goal scorer with 130 goals to his name, surpassing Siyabonga Nomvethe, who netted 129 goals.

However, Mngqithi is convinced the defending Betway Premiership champions received a dubious penalty, stating that the foul leading to the spot kick happened outside of the box.

“I was so happy for him, I watched that game and I saw what happened – another dubious penalty to be honest. Let’s not lie, it’s another dubious penalty because I don’t think that foul was inside the box,” said the former Downs mentor.

While he is adamant the penalty should not have stood, the KZN-born tactician hailed Shalulile for achieving the milestone, highlight the player’s professionalism, having worked with him during his time at Chloorkop.

“But I’m very happy for Peter because he is deserving of anything that comes his way and in fact, I am going to call him because I truly believe he’s one boy that has gone through everything,” Mngqithi added.

“It’s one boy that hardly played at the FIFA Club World Cup but still fights for what he believes in and he’s the best professional I have ever worked with. There are never any issues with Peter, always focused, laser sharp in everything.

“For him to become the highest scorer in our league, I think it’s one of those things that you say maybe karma is saying, ‘this is the one,’ because lifestyle, level of professionalism, when does he come to training, what does he do every day, he is the epitome of what professionalism is about.
