Manuel Neuer was named UEFA’s Player of the Match after producing a series of remarkable reflex saves in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 Champions League quarter-final first-leg win over Real Madrid in Spain on Tuesday night.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Neuer expressed satisfaction with the win, but also also voicied frustration at failing to keep a clean sheet

“It’s a shame it didn’t end 2-0 – honestly. You know how dangerous Real Madrid are. We saw that today. They had a few chances and left some opportunities behind. We’re happy with the win here, but it will still be a tough and challenging task,” Neuer said.

On Kylian Mbappé’s 2-1 goal, which Neuer got a hand to but couldn’t stop, the 40-year-old joked:

"Was it really in? That’s outrageous. In that case, it’s a goalkeeping error (laughs)."

The German veteran also praised Real stars Mbappé and Vinícius Jr.:

"They are among the best players in the world. They can shoot with both feet, are very strong in dribbling, and difficult to defend against. Of course, if we stay compact and have enough players around, it’s easier. But in a one-on-one, it’s very tough."

The return leg for Bayern takes place next Wednesday at the Allianz Arena, where the German champions will hope Neuer can produce another top-class performance.
