The trial of the medical team who cared for Diego Maradona in his final days was jolted on Thursday in Argentina. Images of the Argentina legend’s body were shown in court, prompting visible distress among relatives.

According to L'Équipe, judges in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires, viewed a 17-minute recording filmed by forensic police on the day of his death in November 2020. The footage showed the former Argentina number 10 lying on his bed with a markedly distended abdomen.

The screening was followed by a photograph of the former Napoli player on his deathbed. Gianinna, one of Maradona’s daughters, wept and covered her face, while other family members were also shaken.

Emergency doctor Juan Carlos Pinto, who attended on 25 November 2020, told the court Maradona presented extensive oedema, a swollen face and an abdomen like a balloon. He said these signs reflected both his obesity and a major build-up of fluid.

Seven healthcare workers are being tried for possible negligence in the final weeks of the 1986 World Cup winner’s life. They deny any responsibility.

The case resumed after the annulment of an initial procedure in 2025, and could continue until July with two hearings each week.
