Marc Rétali, an Alsatian podiatrist lined up for the France backroom team under Zidane, has been dropped before his first camp. He says his media interviews were held against him and that he had not been briefed on any duty of reserve. He told Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace and L’Alsace.

What should have been a career high, after years treating patients and elite athletes including cyclists Warren Barguil and Paul Seixas, has soured. On Monday he was due at Clairefontaine for his first gathering with the national side.

His name, like several others, leaked in mid-August. He shared his delight with local press and also spoke to a national outlet. Those interviews, he says, did not sit well with his prospective employers.

When the staff list was made official on 15 September, Rétali was omitted and replaced by Serge Isidoro. The change was explained as a failure to respect a duty of reserve.

Rétali now wants to set out the timeline and rejects what he regards as an unfair case against him. He believes he is being made an example.
