Marcel Loncle, the former France international and Rennes forward, has died aged 90. Stade Rennais announced the news on Friday and, in a message of condolence, described the left-footed striker as a club legend after the 1965 Coupe de France triumph. A tribute will be held at Roazhon Park during Saturday’s derby against Lorient, kick-off 5pm.
He marked his 90th birthday on 5 January.
Born in Saint-Malo in 1936, Loncle began his career in his home town before moving to Angers. He made 150 appearances for the club between 1956 and 1962, scoring 34 goals.
He then joined Rennes, where he played 156 matches and scored 37 goals. He lifted the Coupe de France in 1965 and won two caps for France that year.
Selected for the 1960 Olympic Games, he later returned to play for Saint-Malo, then Paramé, and played a major role with the Brittany representative team.
Loncle also served as Rennes sporting director between 1984 and 1986.
