Marcel Schmelzer has left his role with Borussia Dortmund II, ending more than two decades at the club. The 38-year-old served on Daniel Rios’s U23 coaching staff.

“I personally have planned this for a long time,” said Schmelzer. He was speaking to Ruhr Nachrichten.

“Even those responsible knew that I was taking a break after the end of the contract to take care of the family. That's exactly my priority now.”

He first worked with the U17s before stepping up to the U23s in 2024. He did not specify whether he will return or how long the pause will last, and Kicker noted that he is pursuing his UEFA A coaching licence.

BVB marked his departure, and that of physiotherapist Daniel Zolinski, before the U23s’ final home game against Köln, which finished 1-1. They will end their campaign away at SC Wiedenbrück.

Borussia Dortmund II are fourth in Regionalliga West, level on points with Schalke II in third and Borussia Mönchengladbach II in fifth.

Schmelzer played 367 games for Dortmund, winning the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012 and the DFB-Pokal three times.
