Villarreal and Marcelino García Toral will part company at the end of the season. The club said in a statement that the announcement came after a strong campaign and qualification for next season’s Champions League.
The move is by mutual agreement, with differing views on the future sporting project cited. Both sides stressed respect and gratitude for a spell of significant competitive value, and the club thanked Marcelino and wished him well.
Marcelino’s exit is not related to results, as he has exceeded the club’s main targets. He will have the chance to say goodbye at Estadio de la Cerámica across the two remaining home games, against Sevilla and Atlético Madrid.
Villarreal must now begin a new cycle in the dugout. They do so from a position of strength, with Champions League football secured, a competitive squad and a sporting structure to shape the next step.
Marcelino will close his second stint with the recognition of the club and supporters. He is the coach with the most games in Villarreal’s history and, if he completes the schedule, will finish on 298 matches across all competitions. He also holds the record for wins, with 144 to date.
His second tenure began in November 2023, when the team were in a difficult moment. He stabilised the side then returned them to compete with the elite, capped by consecutive Champions League qualifications.
