Marcelo Gallardo celebrated his 200-game milestone as River Plate’s boss on Thursday’s Copa Libertadores clash against Emelec.
‘El Muñeco’ has enjoyed a successful tenure as the Millonarios manager, and the special night wasn’t the exception as his team defeated the Ecuadorian side 2-1 with goals scored by Lucas Pratto and Gonzalo Martínez.
It seems like it’s been ages since Gallardo took the coaching job at River, but it was only four years ago. His first day back at the club where he made his debut as a player back in the 90s, was on June 6, 2014, and since then, he’s been transmitting nothing but passion and hope to River’s fanatics.
In his first semester at the helm, Gallardo took River to lift the Copa Sudamericana. During the successful campaign, ‘Los Millonarios’ beat arch rivals Boca Juniors in the semifinals and then defeated Atlético Nacional in the final.
But the greatest success in Gallardo’s tenure came during the summer of 2015, when River Plate trashed Tigres UANL 3-0 and won their third Copa Libertadores in history.
Today, Gallardo’s project is as strong as ever. ‘El Muñeco’ is the leader, symbol and icon of the current Golden era of the Buenos Aires giants. It’s impossible to think of River’s recent glory without crediting him. Perhaps the best example of what his River are, is the Supercopa Argentina victory over Boca.
